filton twinningTwinners Visit Filton

During the early part of June, Filton was host to visitors from our twin towns of Witzenhausen and St Vallier-sur-Rhone. The visit was organised by Filton Twinning Association and visitors were treated to an interesting and enjoyable programme of events.

Our guests arrived on the evening of Thursday 8th June, were greeted with light refreshments and met their hosts for the week, members and friends of the Twinning Association with whom they would live and share the various events.

The first event was a barn dance at the Filton Sports and Leisure Centre on Friday evening, sponsored by the Town Council and everyone appeared to have a very enjoyable time.

On Saturday morning the annual meeting of representatives of the 3 associations took place to discuss issues of common interest and to decide on the dates for the visit to Witzenhausen in 2007, which will be from Wednesday 16th May to Tuesday 22nd May.
On Saturday evening members and their guests were entertained at the Olympus Theatre at the Wise building next to Filton High School with a wonderful concert featuring the Bristol Sinfonia and the Stokes Singers, courtesy of Filton College.

Sunday was a free day, although about 40 people attended an ecumenical service at St Andrews Methodist Church organised by the Rev. Rosemary Davies and also involving Father Thomas of St Teresa’s Catholic Church and Rev. Brian Arman of St Peters Anglican Church.

Monday was filled with a visit to the Commonwealth Museum to visit the Brunel 2000 exhibition and workshops, while on Tuesday there was a trip to the Somerset levels and Wells Cathedral, followed later by an evening of European Entertainment at the Memorial Stadium. All involved agreed that the visit had been both enjoyable and informative, continuing the links that have existed between the 3 towns for over 30 years.
