Filton Town Council leases an area land behind Mortimer Road from South Gloucestershire Council laid down to allotments. During the last four years the Mortimer Road Allotment Association has been re-formed. Recently the association has secured grants to fund a water supply and new fences and gates to ensure the security of the site, paid for by the Town Council. The allotment holders working in partnership with the Town Council have cleared and ploughed a significant area, which was covered in brambles. All plots are currently fully let.

The Public Library moved from the Old School to was established in the redundant Civil Defence building (now used by SHE 7) in 1949. It then moved to the redundant Methodist Church by the roundabout in 1958.  The new purpose built Library, opened in 1999, in the Shield Centre. It has a Community Room, has greatly improved car parking and access, is more economical to run and is able to provide a better service while continuing the friendly and welcoming atmosphere for which Filton Library has always been noted.  The striking stained glass at the entrance, designed by Celia Frank and Jake Peggs of Opus Glass Design was based on ideas of flight identified during workshops and consultations with local people organised by the Town Council.

Are you over 60?  Do you like good company?  Do you have spare time and would like to fill a mundane afternoon with a social get together?  Would you like to meet new people?  If you can answer yes to any of these questions, we have vacancies at the Filton Grove Club for Senior Citizens.
Come and join us for tea and a chat and meet other people with similar interests.  Our club starts at around 2pm and we have access to a bar where drinks can be purchased. Tea is also served later after which we holds a raffle followed by a game of Bingo.  We arrange subsidised day outings to various locations once a month in the summer and we have a coach holiday for one week in the summer and one at Christmas.  There is also a free Christmas dinner during December.  We meet every Thursday at the Filton and District Social Club in Conygre Grove in Filton.  (The Four Towns and Vale Link Community Transport mini bus is available for transport). Contact Tel: 0117 975 6472 or 0117 975 6480.

Concessionary Fares

South Gloucestershire Council has introduced a half fare bus pass to assist the elderly and disabled with their public transport costs.  The pass can be used to buy single or return tickets at half the adult fare for all local bus journeys which start or finish within the South Gloucestershire area.  The reductions are available after 0900 on Mondays to Fridays and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.  All bus operators including the Ring & Ride services that are provided by Community Transport Groups accept the pass.  National Express now accepts the half fare pass but it is not valid for travel by rail or taxi.

The Council  recognizes that the half fare pass may not be advantageous to all elderly or disabled residents and there is the option of receiving Travel Tokens instead. For information on half fare bus passes or Travel Tokens contact the Concessionary Fares Helpline. Tel: 01454 864864
